Somy, as a Saudi-born, British-raised designer, you are redefining luxury fashion. What has inspired your journey in the fashion world, and how has your heritage influenced your designs?
Growing up, we often hear about the Western world’s dominance in popular culture, from the Renaissance to hip-hop. But I’ve always believed that the East has an equally rich and vibrant story to tell. Our history, culture, and traditions offer a unique perspective that can enrich the global conversation.
It’s time to share these stories with the world, especially as there’s growing curiosity and openness to Eastern cultures. Let’s introduce them to our unique perspectives and show them the incredible value we have to offer
Can you elaborate on some of the specific challenges you faced in your journey?
One of the biggest challenges I’ve encountered in the fashion industry is the lack of mentorship and a tendency for people to keep their knowledge and opportunities to themselves. While other industries thrive on collaboration and sharing, I’ve found that fashion can sometimes be more insular. I would love to see more experienced professionals taking the time to mentor younger talent and foster a more collaborative environment.
How did they shape your understanding of self-belief and authenticity?
As a creative, I’ve always had a solution-oriented mindset. When I faced the challenges of the fashion industry, I decided to take a leap of faith and create my own event. By combining fashion and business, I aimed to foster a more collaborative and supportive environment. The event was a resounding success, and the positive feedback I received reinforced my belief in my vision. It’s proof that with determination and creativity, we can not only overcome obstacles but also create positive change in our industry. And the positive feedback and gratitude I received from attendees of my event have significantly reinforced my self-belief and authenticity. Knowing that my vision and hard work have created opportunities for others has given me a deep sense of purpose and validation. It’s a testament to the power of believing in oneself and staying true to one’s convictions, even in the face of challenges.
How does your role as a lecturer at top universities align with your vision of bridging Eastern and Western cultures, and how do you integrate Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 into both your teachings and your designs?
As a lecturer at top universities, my role provides a unique platform to bridge Eastern and Western cultures. I strive to foster a global perspective in my students, encouraging them to appreciate the richness and diversity of both worlds. By integrating elements of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 into my teachings and designs, I aim to contribute to the nation’s cultural and economic development.
In my courses, I incorporate case studies that highlight the intersection of Eastern and Western practices in various fields. This approach not only helps students understand the global context of their studies but also encourages them to think critically about how to apply these concepts to Saudi Arabia’s specific challenges and opportunities.
In my designs, I consciously seek to blend traditional Saudi Arabian elements with contemporary Western aesthetics. This fusion creates unique and innovative pieces that resonate with both domestic and international audiences. By showcasing the beauty and value of Saudi Arabian culture on a global stage, I hope to contribute to the nation’s cultural soft power.

Through my fashion, I hope to inspire others to embrace their inner strength, celebrate their individuality, and make a positive impact on the world.
Your Malikat collection for 2024 is inspired by the Nabatean queens. How does their legacy influence your vision of modern femininity and empowerment in your designs?

Horses have taught me invaluable lessons about connection, authenticity, and adaptability. Their unique ability to sense when someone is being genuine has shown me the importance of staying true to myself in every aspect of life and work. They’ve also taught me the value of setting boundaries, challenging conventions, and navigating the ever-changing landscapes of both personal and professional growth.
